Opinions—Everybody Has One

It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd

These are lyrics from “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” a top-ten hit song by Elton John. His writing partner, Bernie Taupin, actually wrote the lyrics. And these lyrics have been running through my head lately.

Social media.

The last line resonates with me, and the last word in particular--ABSURD.

Isn’t that a neat word? And it is an interesting choice. I really like it for the meaning it conveys in the song, but I also like it to describe how social media has evolved and deteriorated over the past few years.

One of the reasons for the deterioration? Opinions.

Everybody has an opinion these days, and they are expressed all over social media all day long. People voice their opinions on every topic imaginable. But, are all opinions valid and should everyone be shouting their opinion out into the world?

It’s a sad, sad situation, causing all kinds of strife, anger, and even in extreme cases, depression.

Opinions flood our newsfeeds whether we like it or not, and if you plan on being on social media, you will be exposed to opinions.

Are all opinions valid?

Why do I say that? Isn’t that an opinion itself?

I suppose so, so take it with a grain of salt.

But not all opinions are valid if they are overly emotional, illogical, and deny facts. Opinions are invalid if they deny truth and history. And I personally choose wisdom over opinion.

I am moving once again into social media exhaustion. So I will take a break to regenerate. While I’m away, I will do a mini retreat to restore my soul.

Note: I’ll still be blogging!
